Sanusi bows to President Jonathan

The Emir of Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi reportedly swallowed his pride and begged President Goodluck Jonathan to enable him leave the government house and ascend the throne at the Emir’s palace.

Sanusi had been shacked up in a room at the Kano State Government House whilst police barricaded the Emir’s palace shortly after his appointment as Emir last weekend.

The official reason the police were stationed there was to prevent irate youth and looters from having access to the palace, since the news of Sanusi’s selection by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso caused a lot of disaffection in the state.

However unofficially it was rumoured that President Jonathan sought to have Lamido Sanusi arrested due to alleged overwhelming evidence of fraud and other sharp practices against him during his tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Popular and reliable news source say it was the strength of the case against him that made the new Emir bow to President Goodluck Jonathan, and beg for forgiveness. Reportedly a source said, “Sanusi told the President he was sorry for anything he might have done wrong in the past and asked the President to consider him henceforth as a friend.”

Powerful intermediaries had lobbied on his behalf before the President even agreed to speak with him, Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau pleaded on his behalf.

As at latest report yesterday, the police had been withdrawn from the palace and the new Emir allowed to move in

Mr. President's remark at the inter-party stakeholders summit.

President Jonathan’s remarks on the occasion of the All Political Parties and Political Stakeholders Summit held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), on Thursday< June 12, 2014 in Abuja.

PROTOCOLS

About fifteen years ago, our nation found itself at the cross roads of political determination, its stability and progress threatened, and pushed to the limit. Fear, uncertainty and a near total loss of hope took over the minds of our people.  It appeared we were close to losing our way in the struggle of building a united, prosperous and democratic nation.

2.    At that time, it was the political class that rose to the challenge of rescuing the Nation and steering it back, onto the path of state building and productive enterprise. This courageous struggle for our democracy was fought across ethnic and religious divides, by politicians and statesmen, who put everything at stake, including their lives, to bring back hope to Nigerians and to the Nigerian State.

3.    Nigerians will still recollect the courageous struggle waged by various political associations and pressure groups notably – the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), the Eastern Mandate Union (EMU), the AFENIFERE, and the G-34, among others. Though different in style and ideological inclinations, these political associations, advocated and converged on one central objective:  relaunching the country on the path of true democracy and the preservation of its corporate existence. This they did, irrespective of tribal, ethnic, ideological and political differences. In the process, quite a number of these gallant men and women paid the ultimate price in restoring the nation to a democratic path. This marked the birth of the Fourth Republic.

4.    Thus, on May 29 1999, we not only celebrated our newly won democracy, but also the labours and struggles of these heroes, living and dead, in the struggle for the restoration of our democracy. We also celebrated the rebirth of a nation and the renewal of our collective commitment, towards a stable and self-sustaining statehood.

5.    In the past 15 years of the Nigerian 4th Republic, several milestones have been recorded, in our political development. Our electoral processes have been transformed, strengthened and subjected to guiding principles of universal electoral standards.  With greater election credibility, our democratic image has been enhanced and the culture of separation of powers and respect for the rule of law, deepened.

6.    Perhaps unsung, is the fact that Nigeria has operated and maintained, one of the most robust, effective and decisive electoral justice systems anywhere in the world. Procedures and provisions for seeking judicial redress have always been fully utilized by politicians and political parties before, during and after elections. Till date, every court or elections’ tribunal decision, has been respected and obeyed to the letter, by all parties, whether in or out of government.

7.    With the growth of our institutions, and the rightful positioning of our ombudsman as proper interface in public governance and service delivery, Political Parties and party politics have become entrenched as the anchor and basis of democracy in Nigeria.

8.    The Media, as the Fourth Estate, has also continued to play its role unhindered, as the watch dog. It is not in doubt that Nigeria has one of the freest media in the whole world, operating within fundamental freedoms and rights, unrestricted by the State. Lately this freedom of expression has also been robustly and exuberantly embraced by the social media. Today, freedom of association, assembly and expression, within constitutional provisions, is largely taken for granted.

9.    Our democracy has witnessed unbroken political transitions and successful successions of government from 1999 to the present date. However, Nigeria’s social stability and democratic consolidation will be greatly undermined, if by a complacent and indifferent attitude by critical national political stakeholders, it is wrongly presumed that the nation’s democratic system has become invincible and can therefore be taken for granted without constant and careful monitoring.

10.  There are still very remorseless anti-democratic forces operating in the political system, ever ready to exploit lapses in the management of the political and electoral processes. Some of these forces may, indeed, view the forthcoming elections as their last stand to truncate the nation’s hard won democratic liberty. But, dear compatriots, with respect to the 2015 elections in particular, and our journey as a Nation in general, we must never allow these negative forces to prevail.

11.  The onset of the 4th Republic, under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, brought the institutionalization of inter party mechanisms, domiciled in the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Inter – Party Affairs. The concept of inter – party relations and collaboration presupposes that even though political parties may differ in  ideologies, processes and structures of governance, they must remain united in the common objective of preserving and consolidating the nation’s unity and its democratic foundation.

12.  Political party affiliates must, thus, relate with one another and conduct themselves with responsibility and statesmanship focused on positive inputs into governance, whether they be in power at present, or not.

13.  Inter -Party relations and collaboration make it incumbent on the party in power, at any level or section, to govern in recognition of the beneficial voices and views of opposition parties. And vice-versa for the parties out of government, to proffer issue-based engagement, geared towards improved performance in governance, and service delivery to the people. This is only possible through a rancour free relationship among political parties, in their conduct, acts and utterances.

14.  Nigeria’s political history since independence is replete with examples of viable collaborations among political parties, in and out of government. In the first Republic, the ruling Northern Peoples’ Congress (NPC) had an alliance with the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC), which allowed the leader of the latter, the late Right Honourable Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, to become the President of Nigeria.

15.  In the Second Republic, a unique alliance between the ruling National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and the Nigerian Peoples Party (NPP) made it possible for the NPP, which did not have a majority in the House, to produce the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

16.  At the commencement of the 4th Republic, on invitation by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), members of opposition parties were appointed Ministers, Special Advisers to the President and into other positions in government. Indeed, the first Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Affairs, the late Senator Mahmud Waziri, was the founding National Chairman of the then opposition All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

17.  In furtherance of its role, the Inter – Party office has continued to promote cordial and positive relationship among all political parties, which culminated in the establishment of an Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), a structure recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

18.  Consequently in 2011, all political parties agreed and committed to a Code of Conduct for political behaviour.  Article 7 of the Code states that: “No political Party or candidate shall during campaign, resort to the use of inflammatory language, provocative actions, images or manifestation that incite violence, hatred, contempt or intimidation against another party or candidate or any person or group of persons on grounds of ethnicity or gender or for any other reason. Accordingly, no Political Party or candidate shall issue any poster, pamphlet, leaflet or other publication that contains any such incitement”.

19.  However, dear compatriots, the current national political outlook with regard to inter -party collaboration is less than salutary. Indeed, the conduct and utterances of leading politicians at home and abroad are rapidly creating and spreading unnecessary tension in the country.  Unguarded utterances on their part, fester the embers of discord, bitterness and rancour.  Such unfortunate developments play into the hands of extremist elements, waging a vicious campaign of terror against the Nigerian State.

20.  The recent mindless bombings and killing of innocent Nigerians in Nyanya in the Federal Capital Territory, Jos in Plateau State, the killing in Adamawa State including that of the traditional ruler as well as the heartless and criminal abduction of over 200 school girls from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno state are better addressed by a political class which is united in its commitment to defend the polity irrespective of political differences.  We must never politicise the fundamental and core imperative of defending the State.  To do so can only embolden the terrorists and other enemies of our Republic who will seek to exploit any perceived political and social divisions for their nefarious ends.  We must never give them such opportunity.  Our political parties must remain positive and constructive engagement as we seek to build a virile, strong and stable nation that can compete with other states in the world.

21.  This Summit today by all political parties in Nigeria therefore offers the opportunity for political parties and, indeed, politicians to reflect and review the possible consequences their actions, conduct and utterances in the recent past have had and could have, on our polity, national security and corporate existence.  This Summit must be an occasion for political rejuvenation and re-orientation.  Its outcome must be a common stand against all and any anti-democratic forces that are currently waging a vicious and mindless war against the State.

22.  Fellow compatriots, we must first build a nation before engaging in arguments on how best to run it. The system is not yet so shockproof to withstand all unguarded and careless political statements and actions. If our state enterprise fails,   no political party or politician will be spared from the consequences.

23.  Hence, at a time such as this when our existence as a nation is threatened by anti-democratic forces we, politicians and political parties, must rise to the higher moral ground in defence and protection of our existence as one nation and one people. Our role should not be limited to the struggle to win elections and acquire political power, but also to handling the demands of patriotism and statesmanship, and restoring hope to the Nigerian people.

24.  In all these, it is exigent that the acts, conducts and utterances of all political stakeholders reflect, to the highest level, a commitment to the defence and preservation of our social cohesion, our political stability and our sovereignty as a nation. We must reinforce, and recommit our various supporters across the nation to the Nigerian Project, irrespective of party affiliation, ideological differences and alliances.

25.  History will not judge us kindly if this country fails as a result of our actions, or inactions. Let us bear in mind that no advantage or benefit can be gained by any political party, over the other, if our democracy fails.  We have no choice but to work together and, that time, is now.

26.  I must express my profound gratitude to all the political patties that answered this clarion call today. You have indeed demonstrated statesmanship and patriotism as well as the willingness to put partisanship aside in the collective fight to preserve our nationhood.

27.  Finally, I commend the Offices of the National Security Adviser and the Special Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs, for organizing this all-important Summit, which couldn’t have come at a better time. I sincerely hope that the Summit will indeed mark a turning point in our democratization process.  I wish you all fruitful deliberations.

28.  I hereby declare this Summit open. Long live Nigeria!   May God bless you all

News: Residents repel armed robbers

Residents of Jones Street and Daodu Lane in Ebute Meta, Lagos State, in the early hours of Wednesday, confronted some suspected armed robbers in the area.

They succeeded in apprehending two of them and handed them over to the Iponri Police Division.

The suspects were said to have been part of a gang that had spent hours robbing several houses in the area.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the robbery started about 11pm on Tuesday evening when the gang members, who residents claimed were also cult members, stormed several houses, wielding cutlasses, axes and machetes.

Our correspondent further gathered that the men, who were six in number, were led by one Kingsley, a notorious cult leader with no fixed address.

One of the residents, identified simply as Mr. Ademolu, who sustained machete wounds, said he engaged the robbers in a combat because they wanted to kill him.

He said, “It was about 5am when they got to my house. Everywhere was dark. I was aware that they had been raiding the neighbouring houses and I was trying to reach the vigilante group in the area.

“Unfortunately, that did not work out. Not long after, they broke the front door of my house and rushed in. They began to beat me after getting some money which they claimed was not enough.

“They hit my back with their machetes. That was when I also picked an iron object, and rushed at them. My elderly son did too. Their torches fell, and they were looking for how to escape. Then, I alerted other nearby residents, and we rushed at them.”

Our correspondent learnt that although the gang leader and three members escaped, residents were able to catch two of them.

After the suspects had been beaten, the vigilante group, with some residents handed them over to the police on Wednesday morning.

Ademolu, who showed our correspondent the wounds on his body, added that the suspected robbers stole N60, 800 and two mobile phones from him. He is being treated at a private hospital in Oyingbo.

Another victim, Mr. Olatunji Oluawo, whose house was broken into around 2.30am, said when the suspects could not break into his room, they smashed his two cars in anger.

He said, “I went to bed at about 12am. About two hours after, I began to hear hard knocks on our gates. The next thing was that they entered the compound, and ordered us to open our doors.

“My wife kept shouting ‘thief, thief’. But they threatened that we called the police, they would kill me. They smashed my two cars, and broke my padlocks. Fortunately, the police eventually came, but by that time, the robbers had gone. Well, I have resolved that I am leaving the area. I cannot endanger my family. We have endured robbery attacks for long on this street.”

Our correspondent further learnt from a security source that although men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad came to the area, no arrest was made. The source also added that the two suspects, caught by the residents, are still being held at the Iponri Police Division.

The Lagos State Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said she would get back to our correspondent with details, but she had yet to do so as of the time of going to the press.

Naija Economy : Increase in FG revenue

Federally collected revenue stood at N922.08 billion as at April 2014, a report has shown.

The amount exceeded the receipts in the preceding month and the corresponding period of 2013 by 5.3 and 17.2 per cent, respectively.

Relative to the preceding month, growth in estimated federally-collected revenue (gross) in April was attributed to increase in non-oil revenue, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disclosed in its economic report for April 2014.

At N622.90 billion, gross oil receipts, which constituted 67.6 per cent of the total revenue, was lower than the receipts in the preceding month by 9.6 per cent, but was higher than its level in the corresponding period of 2013 by 1.6 per cent.

The decline in oil receipts relative to the preceding month was attributed to the shortfall in receipts from exports due to pipeline vandalism, resulting in drop in production.

Furthermore, it showed that gross non-oil receipts, at N299.18 billion or 32.4 per cent of the total, exceeded the receipts in the preceding month and the corresponding period of 2013 by 60.6 and 72.4 per cent, respectively.

The increase in non-oil revenue relative to the preceding month was due to the increase in receipts from the Independent Revenue of the federal government and corporate tax.

“Of the gross federally-collected revenue, the sum of N530.10 billion (after all deductions and transfers) was transferred to the federation account for distribution among the three tiers of government and the 13 per cent derivation fund.

“The federal government received N249.08 billion, while the state and local governments received N126.34 billion and N97.4 billion, respectively. The balance of N57.27 billion was credited to the 13 per cent derivation fund for distribution to the oil-producing states,” it stated.

Furthermore, the report indicated that foreign exchange inflow and outflow through the CBN in the review month was $3.78 billion and $4.16 billion, respectively. This resulted in a net outflow of $0.38 billion, in contrast to the net inflow of $0.48 billion in the preceding month.

According to the report, relative to the level in the preceding month, inflow fell by 22.6 per cent, but indicated an increase of 16.7 per cent above the level in the corresponding period of 2013.

The decline in inflow relative to the preceding month was attributed to the 24.5 per cent fall in crude oil receipts.

Foreign exchange outflow fell by 5.7 per cent below the level in the preceding month, but was an increase of 23.3 per cent above the level in the corresponding period of 2013.

It also indicated that total assets and liabilities of the deposit money banks (DMBs) amounted to N24.778 trillion. This reflected an increase of 1.2 per cent above the level at the end of the preceding month

Students Resist illegal arrest

Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara state was in tumultuous chaos on Wednesday, when three unidentified fully armed men stormed the university’s campus at Adewole area of the metropolis to arrest a female student.

The appearance of the gunmen raised suspicions, making some male students of the institution to prevent them from effecting the arrest of their female colleague, an action the school authorities supported, as the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. AbdulKareem Age, said it was wrong for any security operative to carry out any operation within the university campus without formally notifying the management about such action.

The development disrupted academic activities at the university before the police from Adewole police station were invited to douse the tension.

According to the VC, the policemen from Adewole division upon arrival at the university arrested the armed men and later transferred them to the state police headquarters.

“What happened this morning is a case of misjudgement by the authority that is supposed to be enforcing law. They came to the campus and tried to arrest a female student. We had to intervene because students insisted that their colleague cannot be arrested from campus without letting the authorities know.

“It is very unfortunate that anybody will come to the university campus and want to make an arrest without making efforts to notify the constituted authorities.

“Anyway if we had not come there to address the students because these men were armed, I do not know what would have happened. We thank God; the only person that got wounded was myself when I was trying to clear the debris that the students put in front of the vehicles.

“These people were in mufti. That is what was more disturbing. If you come in uniform and you want to effect an arrest, you still need to tell constituted authority. But to make the matter worse, when you come to the campus with plain clothes and want to arrest a female student, it is not something that the students will stomach.

“We called for police and they came. The people that came to make arrest are with the police now. Meanwhile, the student is safely in our hands. She is a 200 level student. The situation is calm now. We cannot obstruct the police from carrying out their work but this time we are going to make sure that somebody accompanies the lady.”

When contacted, the spokesman of the state police command, Ajayi Okasanmi, said the command was aware that the armed men came to the state for an investigation and they followed the normal procedure.

“The commissioner of Police directed them to the state CID where they should do normal documentation. The state CID further directed them to take the letter to the Area Commander Metro, who could, if there is any need, give them police assistance which we believe they must have done only for us to receive an alert this morning that there was a kind of disquiet in Al-Hikmah university,” he stated.

Early Meal - integrity

Integrity is a character quality of someone who has sound moral judgment. They don't compromise truth. They deal honestly with others. Integrity can only be achieved by listening to the Holy Spirit. Integrity is something that you prove you have during difficult situations. It is being able to make the right decision even though it may cost you something. If you know in your heart that you made the right decision, you don't have to worry about getting caught or exposed. Walking with integrity is one of the best ways to prove that you are become more mature in your walk with Jesus.

Early Meal - Acts of Repentance 3

God sent His only son Jesus to Earth for primary purpose: to give us new life. In Luke 5:27-32, Jesus rewords His mission this way: "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repent." Christ came so sinners like you and I could have new life through our repentance and His forgiveness. Our lives are forever changed when we repent and seek His forgiveness. Christ's mission is also our mission. We are called to not minister to the righteous, but rather to those who are lost and in need of forgiveness. If you have sincerely repented of your sins and God has forgiven you of those sins, then you have a story to tell to those who need repentance. Your life change can create the same change in the life of another. Who do you know that needs to repent and receive God's forgiveness? How can your story of God's forgiveness help someone else come to repentance?

Early Meal - Acts of Repentance 2

1 Peter 2: 11-25

Have you ever gotten lost? It can be one of the most frustrating feelings to not know where you are going. In fact, in some situations it can be terrifying. In verse 25, Peter compares us to sheep in that when we were living in sin, we were astray and lost. We didn't know where to go, but after repenting of our sins and receiving God's forgiveness we have returned to the flock that is led by God our shepherd. Where do you keep going astray? Maybe you are striving to stay on God's path, but keep getting sidetracked onto the secondary roads by some sin in your life. Confess that sin to God. Repent of it today and ask God to help you in fully overcoming it.

Early Meal - Acts of Repentance

Repentance results in forgiveness. We repent and God forgives. Repentance and forgiveness are not difficult concepts. Repentance is our action and forgiveness is God's reaction to us out of His perfect love for us. While the process is simple, the power of God's forgiveness is unfathomable. God's forgiveness eliminates all darkness in our lives and brings us into the light no matter what sins we have committed. God's forgiveness covers ALL sins including yours. How has the redemptive power of God's forgiveness changed and impacted your life?
